Finally I managed to grow mint leaves!
Few months ago, I had bought a bunch of mint leaves from the wet market near home. The leaves went into my meal of soup as well as into my spaghetti. Saved the twigs and soaked them in water to have them rooted. Presto, after a day or two, the roots popped out. Had them transferred to a pot of soil under shade and after that, it was just a pure waiting game.
How do they taste like? Well, it is just like having toothpaste in your mouth. My mom would bring a pot of water to boil, drop in anchovy stock and the mint leaves and break in an egg. She calls this dish 'toothpaste soup' due to the minty taste. It is quite nice really once you get used to the taste.
My FIL introduced eating spaghetti with mint instead of basil leaves (purely his Malaysian style). And boy, it is rather nice and I do think they made a better married couple than spaghetti with basil. I am sure the Italians would cringe at the thought of it. Pure insult?
Mint leaves are used extensively as garnishing of a bowl curry laksa. Most hawkers are pretty stingy and you will get only a few leaves. Perhaps, the next time you make a trip to have your laksa, consider bringing a tub of mint leaves with you from home.
If at any point in time, you feel down, pluck a leave or two and smell. Mint will surely perk you up! Isn't God wonderful to create such a lovely plant?
